The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos in Plateau State, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, has said no student of the university died in the twin explosions that occurred close to the school’s gate on Thursday.
This was contrary to reports in some sections of the media (The Eagle Online not included).
Mufuyai appealed to parents and guardians to disregard such information.
He said the students are all safe and are writing their examinations, except for a 100 Level Medical Science students, who was mildly injured but treated discharged on Friday.
Mafuyai told journalists: “I am here to give clarification on the unfortunate incident which happened close to the University gate on Thursday.
“There is no truth in the claim in some newspapers that 12 students died in the incident.
“The incident happened 160 meters away from the gate of the institution and opposite the entry gate of the Department of Pharmaceutical Science.
“Only a 100L Medical Science student was injured but not fatally as she’s to be discharged today (Friday).
“We have been working and still working with security agencies to get complete identification of the affected victims.
“The affected student is in high spirit and looking forward to write her paper tomorrow.”
Mufuyai further assured parents and guardians of the students’ safety as examinations are in progress and “the security of lives and property of students are not taken lightly”.
