Lagos-based Ikorodu United FC will consider playing its home games of the 2016/2017 Nigeria National League in Abeokuta, Ogun State for logistics reasons, an official said on Thursday.
The club’s Media Officer, Babatunde Ayoola, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that Ikorodu United were now preparing for a new challenge in lower league.
NAN reports that after an unsuccessful spell in the Nigeria Professional Football League, the “Oga Boys” as they were fondly called by their fans were relegated.
They were last on the 2015/2016 NPFL log with 32 points after 36 matches.
On their preparation, Ayoola said that the club was ready for their new challenge, adding that it was undergoing restructuring.
Ayoola said: “We are preparing for the challenge and the team has been training under Assistant Coach, Giwa, who is standing in for the Head Coach, Paul Le Guen.
“The club may also consider playing its home matches in Abeokuta for logistics reasons. There are presently three clubs from Lagos that will play in NNL next season.
“The Lagos Football Association has yet to come up with the modalities we are going to adopt because we also have one team playing in the NPFL.
“The long and short of it is that we are getting ready regardless of anything that may happen; we are not distracted, we want to bounce back to NPFL.”
Ayoola said that the players in the camp were in high spirit, adding that some new players would be injected into the team.
He said: “The players and officials are concentrating on the training for now; we want to get the best, so, there may be some changes in the team.
“The club will employ the services of some new players to shore up the squad so as to have a formidable team for the season.”
