The Affiong Etuk Foundation for Inclusive Health, a non-governmental organisation in Akwa Ibom State, has called on the public to show special care and support for people living with dementia.
Prof. UduakArchibong, founder of the group, stated this during the organisation’s 10th anniversary celebration, held at the Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio Secretariat in Uyo over the weekend
Addressing the audience, Archibong explained that the foundation’s mission is to transform dementia care and support in Nigeria, provide evidence-based advice to people with dementia and their families or carers, and assist healthcare providers in fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity.
“This foundation is about promoting inclusive healthcare, but our main focus is supporting people living with dementia and their families,” she said.
The immediate past information commissioner in the state, Ini Ememobong, who chaired the occasion, praised the organisation’s efforts and called for closer collaboration with the state government.
He said, “I think this discussion is timely given the current administration’s commitment to general healthcare. There is a need for synergy to ensure efforts are not duplicated, especially now that the government is building a care home.”

An Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Consultant Neurologist at the University of Uyo, Dr. Bertha Ekeh, in her lecture titled “Managing Dementia,” stated that there is no existing cure for dementia. She emphasised that people living with the condition require proper care and understanding.
