The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. Godknows Igali, on Wednesday said the Federal Government was exploring the various energy sources to meet the target of 40,000MW by 2020.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Press of the ministry, Timothy Oyedeji, in Abuja.
The statement quoted Igali as saying this at a peer review meeting with Permanent Secretaries in the Civil Service.
Igali said that the target of power generation peaking at 40,000MW by year 2020 was realisable with more capacities expected from the new hydros, solar, wind and coal.
He said that the ministry’s mandate was to provide policy framework for the realisation of electricity for domestic and industrial uses of Nigerians.
He said: “For a long time, government has regulated the sector; the attending problems have been with us for long.
“Now, the determination of government is to change gear and allow the private sector to come in to power the sector.”
Igali stressed the need for both local and foreign investors to invest in the sector, especially the transmission sub-sector, which government did not privatise due to its central role.
He expressed optimism that Nigerians would soon experience improved power supply as a result of government commitment to the sector.
