Federation postpones Nigeria Taekwondo Open, proposes new date

The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation on Tuesday said it has postponed the Nigeria Taekwondo Open, and was now looking at Feb. 8 as a new date for the event.
The NTF Technical Director, Chika Chukwumerije, said the postponement was to enable athletes in Nigeria and other West African countries conclude the World Taekwondo Global Membership System Licence.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Taekwondo Open was earlier slated to hold from November 16 to November  18 in Abuja.
According to Chukwumerije, the GMS is a compulsory requirement to register for any global taekwondo event.
He said: “More than 150 competitiors from nine countries in West Africa are working hard to obtain the mandatory GMS licence, which will enable them register for the event.
“The postponement gives the competitors three months to obtain a valid GMS licence and benefit from the world taekwondo ranking event.
“A new competition date of Feb. 8 to Feb. 10 has been proposed to the world body and once an approval is given, it will be communicated to all.’’
Chukwumerije urged all competitors who are yet to register to make good use of the extra time to contact their federations to help them process their GMS.
He said this would help them register on time once the registration was restarted.
NAN reports that the Nigeria Taekwondo Open was recently ranked by World Taekwondo as an international event.
