Scores of residents of Lagos State on Thursday rushed to Automated Teller Machines points to make last minute withdrawals ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections, slated for Saturday.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria and those of The Eagle Online who went round Lagos State, especially Badagry, Ikeja and Ogba, reported that the residents queued at the ATM points at all available banks from very early in the morning.
From Badagry, NAN reports that the queues were noticed at First Bank, Diamond Bank, UBA, Zenith Bank, Wema Bank and Skye Bank.
However, the ATM point at Union Bank was not working.
Wale Adebiyi, a father of two, who was at First Bank, told NAN: “I need money for the upkeep of my family.
“I do not want to be caught unawares so I am here to get money for the welfare of my family.
“The queue is long but I really do not mind in case the machines do not work.”
A student, Toyin Olumiyide, said she came to withdraw money to travel.
Olumiyide said: “The queue is very long because of the restriction of movement on Election Day.”
Another resident, Jeff Nweke, said that apart from the elections, the long queues might have been due to limited ATM points in Badagry.
“It is very frustrating staying in the queue but there is little or nothing I can do than to wait for my turn,” Nweke said.
An official of Zenith Bank, who pleaded anonymity, said the bank had loaded its ATM machine for the third time today.
He said: “The ATM machine had been loaded for the third time today because of the rush by people to withdraw money.
“We will do our best to satisfy our customers.”
In Ogba, most of the banks had long queues.
This was as a result of the fact that some of the cash points were not working.
At UBA on Ogba Road, only one of the machines was working for a very long time whole a correspondent of The Eagle Online was there.
It was the same at the ATN points of Guarantee Trust Bank Plc on Iju Road.
Just one of them was functional at about 5pm.
