Samuel Ekeoma, the national coordinator of the Nigeria Para-Badminton Federation on Monday praised his athletes for winning seven medals at the just concluded Uganda Para-Badminton International Championships in Kampala, Uganda.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the country’s representatives won one gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the second edition of the championship which ended on Sunday.
Chinyere Okoro won gold in the women’s single SL3 event while Ijeoma Chukuemeka came second behind her to settle for silver.
Also, Bello Oyebanji and Chinyere Okoro clinched silver medal in the mixed doubles SL3-SL5 event.
Also, Chukwuebuka Eze and Bello Oyebanji won two bronze medal in the men’s singles SL3 and SL4 respectively.
Oyebanji and Eze also won silver medal in the men’s doubles SL3-SL to wrap-up the country’s medals at the championship.
Ekeoma, who spoke to NAN from Kampala, said that the performance of the athletes was impressive and good for the image of the sport.
He said: “This is a great news for Para-badminton in Nigeria, our athletes have done a great job that is worthy of commendation.
“This is our second time in this championship and it is a great improvement compared to what we achieved in the first edition.”
NAN reports that Nigeria won two bronze medals in the maiden edition of the championship in 2017.
NAN also reports that six athletes represented the country in the event held from April 25 to April 29.
He added that the athletes would also compete in the African Para-Badminton Championship which commenced today in Uganda.
The tournament which started today would end on May 5.
The coordinator said that their performance in the Kenyan championship would spur the athletes to perform well in the African championship.
