The Nasarawa State chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers has caution its members against violating traffic rules, especially during the Eid-El-Fitr period.
Salihu Adamu, the Chairman of NURTW, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lafia.
Adamu said: “The call is part of the sensitisation the union is carrying out in order to reduce the rate of accidents in the state during this period.’’
He said that the union had also set machinery in motion to check the issue of overloading, over speeding and dangerous overtaking by commercial drivers.
He warned those in the habit of violating traffic rules to desist from it, saying if caught, they would face serious disciplinary action.
He also warned commercial drivers from loading outside the approved motor parks across the state.
He said: “Any commercial driver caught operating in illegal motor packs would be disciplined in accordance with the laws governing the operations of the union.
“The union under my leadership is working round the clock towards ensuring that commercial drivers operate in only approved motor packs.
“We will address the problem of proliferation of unapproved motor packs and ensure drivers observed traffic rules in order to reduce the rate of accidents in the state.”
He therefore expressed the union’s readiness to synergise with Federal Road Safety Commission and other security agencies to reduce the rate of accidents in the state.
