Diocese of Lagos West Church of Nigeria marks 25th anniversary

The Diocese of Lagos West Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) is rolling out the drums in celebration of its silver jubilee this month. 

The Lord Bishop Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. James Olusola Odedeji, revealed this in a statement he endorsed on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the highlights of the week-long celebration, starting on November 15, 2024, include an Anniversary Thanksgiving service at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja on November 20, 2024 and a dinner later that day at Balmoral Event Center, Sheraton Hotel, also in Ikeja.

To mark the anniversary, the sod of a multipurpose, high-rise building will be turned at the site of the former Bishops Court on Joel Ogunnaike Street, Ikeja GRA.

On November 19, 2024, characteristic of the Diocese to give to the society, the Diocese will donate hospital equipment to the Lagos State University. 

This is to contribute directly in supporting the health policy of the state government. 

The Diocese covers about 10 of the 20 local government areas of Lagos State carved out of  the Diocese of Lagos, the oldest Diocese in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) on November 20, 1999. 

It has since taken giant steps that have turned it to the envy of other Dioceses and denominations in the country.

The Diocese has remained relevant to the community as the various parishes run clinics at which members and non members are treated at little or no cost, food banks are stocked in the interest of the poor, while scholarship schemes are instituted at both the Diocesan and parish levels, all to heed the injunction of the Lord Jesus Christ that pure and undefiled religion entails taking care of the underprivileged.

All these and many more strides of the Diocese are captured in a book and a documentary to be launched at a dinner on December 20.

Representatives of the federal and state governments, captains of industry and other leaders of the society have been invited to be part of the programmes that would not leave out the youth, women and the elderly who have all been part of the success story of the pace setting Diocese.

The Rt. Rev. Odedeji, who received the mantle of leadership from the pioneer Bishop, late Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Awelewa Adebiyi, in 2013, has promised that the Diocese would continue to work assiduously towards preparing members for the second coming of Christ by preaching the undiluted word in its almost 400 parishes.
