The Senate President, David Mark, has won the keenly contested Benue South Senatorial District election held on Saturday in Otukpo, Benue State to retain his seat in the National Assembly.
Announcing the results on Monday in Otukpo, the Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Prof. Latif Tiamiyu, said Mark polled 99,538 votes to beat Daniel Onjeh of All Progressives Congress, who scored 50,115 to retain his seat in the Senate.
Tiamiyu commended the electorate for their orderly conduct, saying the exercise was free, transparent and fair.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the senatorial seat covers nine local government areas and has the second largest tribe in the state.
NAN also reports that by this victory, Mark is set to represent the zone in the National Assembly for the fifth time, having represented it for the past 16 years.
Also declared winner was the incumbent member of the House of Representatives, Ezekiel Adaji of the PDP, who scored 21,873 votes to beat Nelson Alapa of the APC with 19,203 votes.
The results were declared by the returning officer for that election, Prof. Adams Okpala.
