Two trucks have crushed 38 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Some of the students involved in the accident, which occurred late on Friday, are still trapped under the trunk of the construction truck as at the time of filing this report.
The accident occurred right in front of the headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State at Aramoko.
The students were travelling in a Coaster Bus, painted white and with the inscription: Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.
Sources at the scene of the accident said that the trucks were headed for head-on collision.
On seeing this, the driver of the school bus swerved in the direction of the fence of the local government headquarters, ramming into it.
But one of the trucks allso went in that direction, crushing the bus.
The 38 students and their driver were trapped under the truck.
So far, rescue efforts have resulted in the retrieval of 34 of the students, with four others still trapped.
Some of those who have been and are still at the scene of the accident since it occurred at about 10pm on Friday include top management staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.
The Rector, Deputy Rector and Deputy Registrar of the school are still at the scene of the accident.
The students were returning from Lagos where they had gone for excursion since Tuesday.
They are final year students of Electrical/Electronics, with Telecoms option.
Those severely injured are at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital while those with minor injury are receiving treatment at the Health Centre of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.
The number of dead could not be confirmed as at press time.
But a source at the scene said some of the students died before they could be brought out of the wreckage.
