The Rivers State Police Command said on Sunday that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the bloody clash by two rival cult groups in Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LocaL Government Council.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the clash, which took place in the night of February 12, claimed six lives as reported by the Police.
However, independent sources put the death toll at no fewer than 18.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt that the suspects, both male, were arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department.
Muhammad said: “Following the incident at Omoku on Friday night, the command has for now arrested two suspects.
“They are now undergoing interrogation at the state CID.”
Muhammad also said a reinforcement of anti-riot policemen sent to the town had brought normalcy to the area.
“As things are now, the situation is under control as more anti-riot policemen were sent to reinforce existing security in the town,” he added.
