An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a student, Olanrewaju Aremu, 21, at Ikoyi Prison for allegedly killing his father, Kayode Aremu.
The Magistrate, Y.B. Okusanya-Badejo, ordered that the accused be kept in prison custody pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the court did not take the plea of the accused, Aremu, who resides at 4, Alhaja Railat Street, Langbasa, Oke Ira Nla, Ajah, Lagos, is facing a murder charge.
The prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the crime was committed on May 1 at about 10:30pm at Oke Ira Nla, Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos.
He said that the accused, an ex-student of the University of Ilorin, was expelled from the institution due to poor academic performance.
Osuji said that the Aremu family had finished supper and were relaxing in the sitting room and shortly after Olanrewaju went upstairs.
He said that deceased’s phone rang shortly after and the head of the family also went upstairs to his bedroom.
“The deceased’s wife heard a shout and she rushed upstairs and she saw her husband in a pool of blood,” the prosecutor said.
Osuji said that the wife saw her son with a kitchen knife with which he had stabbed his father several times on his body.
He said that the deceased was rushed to J-Rapha Hospital, Owode, where he was later confirmed dead.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 221 provides that the offence of murder attracts the death penalty.
The magistrate adjourned the case till July 1 for mention.
