Five leading African women will be honoured by the African Union at its 25th Summit, which will take place at Michaelangelo Hotel, Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa from June 11 to 13, 2015.
Chief Dorothy Anyiam-Osigwe alongside President Sirleaf Johnson of Liberia, former President Joyce Banda of Malawi, African Union Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and Winnie Mandela, anti-apartheid heroine and wife of former President Nelson Mandela, will be honoured with the award of ‘Living Legends’.
According to Dr. Erieka F. Bennett, the Head of Mission (AU) Diaspora African Forum Committee, in an award notification letter addressed to Anyiam-Osigwe, the continental body chose her among the awardees as the only non-political leader because of her “commitment to the political, social and economic impact on Africa and the African Diaspora”.
The Theme of the 25th AU Summit is: “Year of Women Empowerment and Development Towards Africa’s Agenda 2063.”
In accepting her nomination for the award, 83-year-old Anyiam-Osigwe expressed her gratitude to the organization for the honour, adding that the award will inspire her and other awardees in their services to the people across Africa the Diaspora as well as encourage others towards good works.
