The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has begun the process for the sanction of Femi Bamidele, its officer who was believed to have led the assault on the Ibadan, Oyo State correspondent of Leadership newspaper, Waheed Adebayo.
According to the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ade Abolurin, Bamidele has been summoned to Abuja and was already undergoing interrogation.
Abolurin, who spoke with The Eagle Online on the telephone, said Bamidele was summoned to Abuja shortly after the report reached him that Adebayo was injured in the process of carrying out his lawful duties.
He said the Corps does not tolerate unjust use of force in its operations.
He told The Eagle Online: “We are already looking at the situation.
“You know we are not a violent organisation.
“So when issues like this come up, we are quick in taking a critical look at it and will not hesitate to punish the officer if found guilty.
“For you to know how serious we have taken this, the officer has since been summoned to Abuja.”
Abolurin said he has established contact with the Nigeria Union of Journalists on the development.
He apologised on behalf of the NSCDC for the development.
He promised to ensure justice was done.
Adebayo was on Friday beaten to pulp with his shirt torn to shreds and personal belongings lost, when he was manhandled by men of the NSCDC while covering an assignment where he was properly accredited to cover as a journalist.
His mobile telephone set and about N20,000 cash was reported lost during the encounter.
