The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday, charged an artisan, Emem Okon, 29, with alleged peddling of 2.9kg of cannabis before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Okon is charged with one count of drug trafficking.
The prosecutor, Jeremiah Aernan, alleged in the charge sheet marked FHC/L/42c/21 that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 21.
Aernan said that the defendant was arrested under a bridge in the Mile 2 area of Lagos, while engaging in an unlawful deal in 2.9kg of Indian hemp.
According to the prosecutor, cannabis is categorised as banned narcotics similar to heroine, cocaine and other restricted hard drugs which are all listed as prohibited in the NDLEA schedule.
He said that the offence of drug trafficking contravened Sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap No. 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The act specifies a penalty of life imprisonment if convicted of the offence.
The new charge has been assigned to Justice Mohammed Aikawa, but no date has been fixed for arraignment of the defendant.
