The National Commissioner, South-East, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu, has urged the electorate in upcoming governorship poll in Anambra to shun electoral illegalities.
Ibeanu made the call on Monday in Awka at the end of his evaluation tour of Anambra ahead of the November 18 election.
He said that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration in the 326 wards was to afford every eligible person an opportunity to obtain the Permanent Voter Card.
Ibeanu said that anybody without the card had no business being around polling centre on Election Day, warning that anyone caught without authorisation at the centres would be arrested and prosecuted.
He said he in the state to ensure that voter registration at ward level was going on as specified by the commission.
According to him, we do not want to create any gap that will hinder the success of the November 18 governorship election in the state.
Ibenau explained that the commission moved the registration from local government level to ward level on August 10 to August15 to ensure that no vacuum was created.
The commissioner said that INEC would publish the voters’ register from August 15 to August 20 in all registration centres for the people to check their names for final compilation.
Ibeanu said that he visited a number of registration centres in four local governments with concentration in Onitsha and environs due to the strategic nature of the city.
He said that he was impressed at the large turnout of people in the areas visited and appealed to persons yet to get their permanent voter card to do so.
He explained that the registration was for new persons and those with complaints in previous exercise, and warned against double registration to avoid fouling the law.
Ibeanu added: “Those who misplaced or lost their card, or those on transfer from their former place of residence to another area can visit INEC office nearest to them for attention.’’
