Ahead of next month’s election in Lagos State, the wife of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has disclosed that Lagos hospitals will provide 24 hours services for accident victims and other emergency patients, if her husband is elected as Governor.
Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, a medical director, gave this commitment when she received over 300 groups that endorsed her husband for the position of the Governor of Lagos on Monday at the Ikeja GRA office of Independent Campaign Group.
She noted that prompt medical attention and care should be the first in a case of emergency before any other considerations.
She said: “Payment of hospital bills should not be the first requirement before any patient that requires urgent treatment should meet before getting medical care.
“We value lives, and that is why we have concluded plans to add to the already existing free medical care in public healthcare facilities, which is ensuring 24-hour free medical care for emergency patients within the first day.
“What this means is that emergency patients can be attended to in our hospitals first within the first day before any other considerations.
“Access to medical facilities will be expanded in Lagos to make healthcare facilities closer to the people.”
Dr. Sanwo-Olu lamented that of the 377 Primary Healthcare Centers in the state, only 301 function effectively, adding: “All PHC facilities will be made functional.”
According to Sanwo-Olu, there are only 26 General Hospitals, including the Accident and Emergency Centre at the Toll-gate end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“This is not enough. Efforts would be made to increase the number to 57, that is, one in each Local Government and Local Council Development Area (LCDA),” she said.
The wife of the APC governorship candidate explained that PHCs are meant to treat minor ailments while the general hospitals are designed to attend to secondary healthcare issues.
She urged Lagosians to make use of Primary Healthcare Centres when necessary to reduce workload at the General Hospitals across the state.
In her remarks, Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the deputy governorship candidate, stressed the importance of waste sorting from homes and workplaces to help the government implement a comprehensive waste management strategy as contained in the THEME policy document of their husbands.
Mrs. Hamzat said: “Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat will ensure that waste management is frontally tackled in Lagos and make our state cleaner.
“On education, they will also increase access to primary and secondary education with modern teaching trend enabled by technology.
“More skill acquisition centres will be established and existing one upgraded to help young people outside the school system to learn new skills to earn decent living.”
