The Peoples Democratic Movement has expressed shock and sadness over the high level of untimely deaths of Nigerians resulting from avoidable airway, waterway and roadway accidents.
The party has called for an immediate restructuring of the transport sector in order to enthrone a rigorous regime of regulation and global best to ensure safety of lives of citizens.
“No nation grows to its optimum economic potential with a shambolic transport system that records incessant fatalities and high morbidity rates,” said Mallam Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim, the National Chairman of PDM, through his Media Advisor, Alaba Yusuf, while commiserating with the families and friends of the victims of the recent air crash in Lagos and boat mishaps in Niger State.
Ibrahim further observed: “Our roads, waterways and airspace have become unsafe due to lack of proper regulation, incompetence and corruption.
“People are dying needlessly on a daily basis because authorities have abandoned their responsibilities to ensure that our transport systems are safe and sound.
“These avoidable deaths are uncalled for and need to be brought to an end by the authorities immediately.
“We condole and commiserate with the families of the victims and pray the souls of our departed rest in peace.”
