Court remands teenager in prison over murder of friend

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Monday remanded a teenager, Taiwo Adesoye, at the Ikoyi Prisons over the alleged murder of his friend.
Adesoye, 18, a bricklayer, who resides at Ikorodu, is facing a charge of unlawful killing.
The Chief Magistrate, Y. O. Aje-Afunwa, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions.
The plea of the accused was not taken by the court.
The Prosecutor, ASP Etim Nkankuk, told the court that the offence was committed on June 25 at Adamo Bus Stop, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Nkankuk said that the accused and the deceased, one Gabriel Abutu, were friends and had worked together as bricklayers.
According to the prosecutor, the accused and the deceased had gone to a drinking joint to enjoy themselves.
He said that while enjoying themselves, the deceased accused Adesoye of stealing N1,000 from him, which resulted in a fight.
“The accused stabbed the deceased on his neck with a broken bottle and he died on the spot,” the prosecutor said.
Nkankuk said that the offence committed contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 221 provides a death penalty for convicted offenders.
The court adjourned the case to August 8 for mention.
