Democracy under threat – Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, has raised the alarm on what he described as “some anti-democratic traits” which, he said, were inimical to the well-being of democracy.
This is just as he enjoined political stakeholders in the country to exercise great caution.
Tambwual said it was time political stakeholders in Nigeria were told not to over-stretch the goodwill they had enjoyed in the democacy, just as he applauded the Nigerian Armed Forces for showing understanding by assisting in helping to sustain democracy in the country.
Tambuwal spoke in Sokoto, during the celebration of Democracy Day in the state, noting that democracy had its essential elements – liberty and freedom.
He said it was incumbent on those who had democratic mandate and responsibilities to start behaving democratically, adding that politicians currently jostling to get re-elected or get elected for the first time should realise that “it is only when democracy is properly entrenched that their ambitions could be fulfilled.”
He added: “I would call on all of us who are actors in this democracy not only to sustain the legacies of our heroes past, by improving on what we have met, but by ensuring that we do not lower the standards, thereby destroying our democracy.”
Tambuwal said he was in Sokoto on the invitation of the state government to celebrate the Democracy Day with members of his family and the good people of Sokoto State, while expressed delight on the long list of achievements credited to the Aliyu Wamakko-led administration in the state.
