The intervention of the Ministry of Labour in the strike action embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria led its suspension.
According to the communique of the meeting held late into the night on Tuesday, the judiciary workers agreed to suspend the strike after an agreement to put their demands in perspective and implement within agreed time frame was reached.
The meeting, held in the office of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, was attended by the leadership of JSUN, representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Federal Judicial Service Commission, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, and the chairman of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.
The communique reads in full: “• By a Communiqué issued at the end of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) held at Niger State on January 29, 2013, JUSUN issued a 21 – day ultimatum to the Federal Judiciary Authorities to embark on an industrial action.
• The ultimatum was for the Federal Government to release circular letter/salary table for the implementation of CONJUSS in all Federal and FCT Courts
•
JUSUN was consequently invited for a conciliatory meeting by the Federal Ministry of Labour & Productivity on March 12, 2013.
• The meeting noted that JUSUN had commenced strike with effect from March 11, 2013 over the issue in dispute
• The meeting placed the issue in dispute within a historical perspective and deliberated extensively on the way forward.
• It was subsequently agreed as follows:
• That the salary structure review should be subjected to the holistic outcome of the White Paper on the Report of the Presidential Salary Harmonisation Committee under the Chairmanship of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
• That a Committee would be set up to identify the peculiarities associated with the job performed by JUSUN members. Membership of the Committee is annexed hereto
• That a time frame not exceeding five (5) months should be allowed for the process of White Paper release to be accomplished as well as the realization of all other issues leading to the issuance of a Circular on a New Remuneration Package.
• The Federal Judicial Service Commission shall monitor and render Progress Report at the meeting to be held in two (2) months time.
• The meeting would reconvene two (2) months from the date of this MoU to assess progress made on issues agreed upon.
• In view of the above understanding, JUSUN hereby suspends its on-going strike.
