The candidate of Labour Party in the June 21, 2014 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, has warned politicians not to turn the state into a battlefield in their quest for power.
Bamidele said the call became imperative following accusations and counter accusations against those seeking political offices during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, Bamidele, a member of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, told politicians to respect the peace accord signed by them before the state Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu.
Bamidele, who is representing Ado/Irepodun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency, told politicians to prevent the repeat of killings that were witnessed in the state before the June 21 governorship election.
The federal lawmaker said his party decided to drum support for the candidature of General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, because of his belief in their abilities to turn around the fortunes of the country.
He said: “The issue of Buhari has gone beyond political parties. Buhari has become a movement in Nigeria that everybody has been embracing.
“So, it is no longer about the party where you belong, but about Nigeria. I remain a member of LP, but the wind of change that is blowing across the country is being embraced by all well-intentioned Nigerians.
“We have candidates contesting for House of Representatives and senatorial race, but I want to be part of history as one of those who changed Nigeria’s course for the better.
“But I want to emphasize that we politicians must respect this Peace Accord because it is only when Ekiti is peaceful that we can be pursuing our aspirations.”
Bamidele boasted that the coalition of forces for Buhari by Nigerians would automatically give him victory during the March 28 presidential poll.
He urged security agencies to be apolitical by treating all political parties as equal so that Nigerians can continue to have confidence in them.
