The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut, on Tuesday said the country was targeting to win at least 40 gold medals at the 11th All-Africa Games.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Games is scheduled to hold between September 4 and 19 in Brazzaville, Congo.
Yakmut told NAN in Abuja he was optimistic the country would excel at the Games once there was a level-playing ground for the participating countries.
He said: “It is going to be a battle of the titans once there is a level-playing ground.
“The battle will be among Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa.
“But the fact that weightlifting is among the sports that will be contested for will make the difference for Nigeria.
“Also, the number of athletes in the contingent will count in Congo because we are going to pick medals in team sports and team sports is a game of number.
“With our number, we may surpass our target of 40 gold medals.”
Yakmut promised the country’s flag would fly high in Congo no matter what, adding that the country’s athletes and coaches were “good to go”.
