Synagogue building collapse: Rights group to sue FG

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights has vowed to drag the Federal Government to court over what it called “the lacklustre attitude of the Federal Government to pay due attention to the mysterious collapse of the Synagogue Church of God”.

The group, speaking through its Vice President, Ade Ikuesan, said the option of litigation became imperative in view of the overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that the collapse of the church building was premeditated.

The CDHR had posited earlier that the building was bombed in view of the situation surrounding the mysterious collapse of the edifice, which claimed 116 lives.

A military aircraft was said to have hovered round the building five times at a very low altitude before the building went down with a thud.

Most of those killed were South Africans.

Ikuesan, who is currently following event as it unfolds at the ongoing coroner inquest in Lagos, said more facts have been emerging to the effect that the building was deliberately felled, contrary to claims in some quarters that the edifice might have collapsed as a result of architectural defects.

He said: “We are considering taking the Federal Government to court over the attack and the killing at the Synagogue Church.

“The CDHR will be going to court to challenge the contrary claim to our position of sabotage concerning the collapse of the Synagogue’s church building. We are aware that the Federal Government is in possession of facts that relates to the attack on the building. We shall use the Freedom of Information act to compel the Federal Government to release the report.”

Ikuesan said his group was in possession of overwhelming evidence to prove its case before the law court that there is more to the collapse of the building than is being taunted presently.

“We have overwhelming evidence that the building was destroyed. Some experts have held similar view. We have the video clips and other facts which indicate that there was sabotage. And as a frontline rights group, we are not ready to allow the case to be swept under the carpet,” he stressed.
