Rule of law key to good governance – Akpabio

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has said the observance of the rule of law by the government was key to good governance in the country and advocated for the building of strong institutions for the sustenance of democracy.
Senator Akpabio made the assertions in Abuja on Tuesday as the Chairman of a Special session on good governance during the the ongoing National Political Summit.
According to Senator Akpabio, for democracy to be meaningful to the people, leaders at all levels must have the interest of the people at heart.
He said the first step was proper budgeting.
The Senate Minority Leader recalled that his success when he was the Governor of Akwa Ibom State was consistently devoting 80 per cent of the state budget to capital projects and the remaining 20 per cent for recurring expenditure.
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his attempt to diversify the economy through non dependence on oil revenue.
In his paper, a Political Economist, Prof. Ebere Onwudiwe said he was privileged to have visited Akwa Ibom State when Chief Akpabio was the governor and recommended what he called the “Akwa Ibom model” to Nigeria.
Onwudiwe said the essence of federalism was to enable states develop at their own pace.
