Former Newswatch Magazine Editor-In-Chief, Ray Ekpu, said on Wednesday that calls for the restructuring of Nigeria would not lead to her disintegration.
Ekpu made the assertion in Lagos at a public presentation of a Book titled: “My Dialogue With Nigeria,” written by Lieutenant General Alani Akinrinade (retd), at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos.
According to him, restructuring Nigeria is an idea whose time has come, whether the people like it or not.
He said: “Mr. President should not listen to those saying that the restructuring of Nigeria will lead to the country’s disintegration.
“It will not. A lot of Nigerians really believe in Nigeria.
“The restructuring of Nigeria will bring a great positive change to this country. This will make the President of Nigeria a great hero.
“The restructuring of Nigeria, we must know, is an idea whose time has come, whether we like it or not.”
Ekpu, the publisher of the book, said there were already signs of restructuring in the country, as some states had started having their own police and vigilance groups.
He said the book was a compendium of the author’s various interviews and writings on his beliefs and need for true federalism in Nigeria.
Ekpu said the author had always exhibited frankness, courage, integrity and humility while in the Nigerian Army and other private endeavours.
The reviewer of the Book, Prof. Adebayo Williams, described the book as a rich collection of the author’s thoughts about true federalism and a better Nigeria.
The author, Akinrinade, said over the years, his family and friends urged him to put his experiences in a book.
He commended those who made the publication and its presentation a success.
Williams described the author as “a thinking soldier in a post colonial Africa”.
The Chairman of the event, Chief Jonathan Olopade, described the author as a Nigerian who continually sought the good and overall transformation of his country.
“This book is a continuation of his quest for peace and progress in this country, Nigeria,” Olopade said.
The book presentation attracted retired military and police officers, traditional rulers, governors, former governors, government representatives, traditional rulers and media executives.
