Two suspected kidnappers were on Friday afternoon killed by operatives of the Ogun State police command while repelling an attempted kidnap of a tipper lorry driver.
The bandits had abducted the tipper lorry driver at the Mologede area of Odeda Local Government Area of the state.
The Divisional Police Officer, Bode Olude Division, DSP Durojaye Rotimi, mobilized his men in conjunction with other security men to the scene, and engaged the bandits in a gun battle during which one of the kidnappers was shot dead.
The victim was rescued unhurt, while other members of the kidnap gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
According to a statement by the public relations officer of the command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, a massive manhunt for the escaped members of the gang was thereafter ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun.
One of the kidnappers who had escaped with bullets wound was found dead in the bush, while another one with bullet wound was arrested.
“The arrested suspect, who identified himself as Mohammed Bello, was discovered to be an ex-convict who had just been released from prison custody in Ibadan Oyo State.
“Some packets of Tramadol and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from them,” Oyeyemi said.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Anti-Kidnapping unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
