Any aspirant wishing to contest the governorship election in Anambra on the platform of Labour Party, will not be given automatic ticket, the Chairman of the party, Chief Sam Oruegbunam, has said.
The election is slated for November this year.
Oruegbunam, who made the announcement on Thursday in Akwa while briefing newsmen, said the decision was reached at a meeting of the state executive council of the party, held on June 19.
He said that the trio of Mr Ifeanyi Ubah, Sen. Andy Uba and Prof. Charles Soludo, who had indicated interests to fly the party’s flag should be ready to subject themselves for the primaries.
“I agree that these aspirants are good prospective candidates but they must follow due process as stipulated in the party’s constitution.
“They must also register officially with the party and become card-carrying members.
“After that, they will have to subject themselves to the party’s primaries and whoever emerges becomes our candidate.
“The era of carrying money about has gone.
“What we want is somebody who would address the governance of Anambra and not those who would worsen the situation that has been created in the past.
“We need somebody that will go in and take Anambra to the next level,’’ he said.
The Deputy Minority Whip of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr Emeka Anohu, who is the only member of Labour Party in the house, said that the three aspirants were yet to join the party.
“I have it on good authority that Ifeanyi Ubah is yet to become a member of the party. I also know that Sen. Ubah and Soludo are still members of the PDP.
“It is when they become members of the party that we would begin to talk about who takes the ticket.
“Our party is democratic and will not give room for somebody to come in and get an automatic ticket.
“Everyone of them must follow the laid down democratic process.
“The party is not ready for any form of horse-trading because we are poised to produce a credible person as governor of Anambra State,’’ Anohu said.
