Motorists, commuters stranded as security check causes gridlock on Abuja-Keffi highway

Commuters and motorists on the Abuja/Keffi highway on Thursday had a hectic time in reaching their destinations due to a gridlock caused by a military checkpoint.
The military barricaded the road, about 100 metres away from the Nyanya bus terminus, which was rocked by explosion on Monday.
Soldiers at the checkpoint stopped and searched vehicles coming into the Abuja city centre, an exercise which created created hardship for motorists.
Many motorists coming into the city had to divert to the Karu bye-pass to beat the check.
Commercial motorcyclists operating between Mararaba and Nyanya cashed in on the situation and raised fare from the normal N70 to N150.
Some commuters who left home as early as 5am could not get to the city centre until about 7am.
Christopher Danladi, a motorist, told the News Agency of Nigeria that he left home as early as 5am.
He got to his office at about 7am.
When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Altine Daniel, said she was not aware of the situation but that security situation in the territory might have necessitated it.
Daniel appealed to the people to bear with the security agencies as the check was conducted for their safety.
