The President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has counselled the defeated governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Barrister Olusola Oke, his Action Congress of Nigeria counterpart, Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu, and others not to waste time going to the tribunal to challenge the victory of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State in Saturday’s election.
Mark said challenging Mimiko’s victory would be an exercise in futility.
Mark, who stated this in Quebec, Canada, where he is attending the 127th Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting, said that the result of the election has confirmed that the wishes of the people of Ondo State have prevailed.
He said: “It would therefore be an exercise in futility if some people go to court to challenge the outcome of the poll even with an overwhelming victory.
“We, Nigerian politicians, must start embracing the democratic culture where the power of the people as expressed through the ballot is respected and seen as supreme.”
According to Mark, Mimiko worked hard to secure the victory, thus making the sentiment canvassed by some politicians during the campaign irrelevant as people preferred merit.
Also commenting, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sir Emeka Ihedioha, said the result of the election in Ondo State has shown that the people appreciate performance.
According to Ihedioha, reports on ground before the election showed that Mimiko worked hard for the people in his first term and that it was only good the people of Ondo State rewarded him with a second term in office.
