A group, the Peoples Democratic Party Renaissance, on Thursday insisted that Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso’s statement that Senator Ahmed Makarfi was the brain behind the Advanced People’s Democratic Party has further strengthened rumours that the former governor of Kaduna State was out to pull down the Peoples Democratic Party.
The organisation said Kwankwaso’s accusation further confirmed its position on the motivation for the former governor’s recent activities, which are inimical to the survival of the PDP.
The National Coordinator of the PDPR, Mallam Shehu Ahmad, in a statement in Abuja, maintained that Makarfi was only interested in his 2019 presidential ambition to the detriment of the over-arching interest of the PDP.
The group said: “He (Makarfi) is using the PDP crisis as a means to advance his presidential ambition. By now, every discerning PDP supporter should be able to see beyond his shenanigans. His over-riding objective is to become President in 2019.”
According to Ahmad, every attempt by the elders in the PDP to ensure that peace returns to the party has been frustrated by Makarfi, whom they accused of planning to hijack the party to further his ambition.
He said: “The PDP must now begin to separate those who are genuinely interested in the growth of the party from those who are merely in it to do business.
“Kwankwaso’s revelation that Makarfi is behind the APDP is instructive , given that all his activities and statements of recent have further divided the party , rather than bringing it closer to the path of peace.”
The group urged the former Kaduna State governor to drop his personal ambition for the stability of the PDP and work towards resolving the challenges currently facing the party.
“Everyone, including Senator Makarfi must now work together to return PDP to power. Only with this cooperation can we be sure of surmounting the problems of the party,” Ahmad said.
