The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, on Monday, granted the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre, as part of ongoing efforts to decongest the state’s correctional facilities.
This decision, according to available information, was driven by two main factors: their deteriorating health conditions and their prolonged detention without trial.
It was learnt that many of the freed inmates were allegedly suffering from severe health issues that worsened during their time in custody.
Justice Abdu-Aboki pointed out that the lack of adequate medical care in the correctional facility further compromised their well-being.
“By releasing these individuals, they can seek proper medical attention outside the confines of the custodial facility,” the Chief Judge stated.

Additionally, some of the inmates had been held for an extended period without facing trial, raising concerns about violations of their rights.
The prolonged detention without legal proceedings was a significant factor in their release, as it contravenes standard judicial practices.
While addressing the released inmates, Justice Abdu-Aboki urged them to maintain good behaviour and avoid actions that could lead to reoffending.
As part of their reintegration into society, each inmate was given ₦10,000 for transportation.
In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Mr. Ado Inuwa, commended the Chief Judge’s gesture, noting that it was not only a step toward addressing overcrowding but also a reflection of compassion toward the health and rights of inmates.
He lauded the CJ’s commitment to improving conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system and ensuring that justice is served fairly.
