The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council, is to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the June 12,1993 presidential poll with a public lecture.
The lecture, which will hold at the Osun Hall of the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja by 9am on Thursday, has as its theme: June 12: Lessons for Today’s Democracy.
In a statement by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Deji Elumoye, and the Secretary, Comrade Sylva Okereke, the lecture will be chaired by a former Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, while Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State will deliver a paper on the theme of the lecture
Those to discuss Governor Ahmed’s paper include rights activist, Femi Falana; the Executive Editor of The News magazine, Kunle Ajibade; the President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Ifeyinwa Omowole; and Co-ordinator of the International Press Centre, Lanre Arogundade.
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State is the Chief Host, while the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mallam Garba Muhammed is the host, with a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, serving as the Father of the Day.
According to the statement, the annual lecture is aimed at celebrating the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The statement added that the lecture will equally afford some Nigerians, who were not part of the struggle, the opportunity to appreciate the challenges faced by the actors of the struggle.
The event is expected to attract dignitaries from all walks of life, including the political class, the media, labour, civil society groups, the academia as well as the general public.
