Equity and Social Justice Initiative an NGO has called on the Federal Government to conduct transparent investigations into the alleged mismanagement of N25 billion by the Registrar, National Examination Council.
The NGO made the call in a statement signed by Shuaib Umar, Executive Director and Carl Umegboro, Director, Strategy and publicity, ESJI made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
The group condemned the suspension of the Registrar, Charles Uwakwe and two other directors describing it as hasty.
It stated that the allegations relied upon for the suspension of the three officials were unfounded and inconsistent with facts obtained from anonymous members of staff of the agency during the group’s independent investigations in Minna.
According to them, the group in its deductions suspects foul play; it is another likely case of corruption fighting back and therefore, demands for thorough and transparent investigation by the Federal Government.
It said: “On the alleged financial mismanagement, our investigation revealed that the suspended registrar since he assumed office has been prudent and compliant to due process in all financial transactions with incomes and expenditures.
“Always making such transactions available to the relevant authorities for inspection and auditing.
“It is sad that a professional institution since its establishment has maintained high standard and complemented the West African Examination Council credibly was subjected to such trivialities for mere selfish interests of few people.
“ESJI condemns in totality the disgraceful developments and suspicious political conspiracy at NECO, which is capable of ridiculing the institution if unchecked.
“Consequently, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene and ensure that justice prevails.’’
It added that the group was also confident in the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who had commendably remained highly focused, principled and ethical on issues affecting the education sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the three were suspended over alleged irregular recruitment process, faulty procurement processes and financial mismanagement of N25 billion.
They were also alleged not to have sought approval from Ministry of Education, the supervisory ministry or from the Governing Board of the council.
