Gbadamosi sad over death of journalist

The pioneer Chairman, Lawyers In The Media of the Nigerian Bar Association, Gbolahan Gbadamosi, on Monday expressed his condolence over the death of Nurudeen Jewola of Newswatch, who died on Sunday.
Jewola’s sudden death, through a kidney-related problem, made Gbadamosi to insist that media owners should provide better security and insurance cover for journalists so as to guarantee better performance of their duties.
Gbadamosi had in July 2012 made a similar call when the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, donated N1 million to an ailing journalist of the African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc, publishers of the Tribune titles, Tunde Babajide.
Babajide was suffering from prostrate cancer and was on admission at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The former Chairman, Guardian newspapers chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, while expressing his gratitude to Governor Ajimobi; Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), who recently donated N1.5 million towards the treatment of the kidney-related problem of Jude Okwue of ThisDay; Chair of Centre for Free Speech, Richard Akinnola, who initiated supports for widows of slain journalists; and other governors who had been coming to the rescue of ailing journalists, noted: “To ensure effective discharge of duties by journalists, comprehensive insurance cover is the best way out.
“How long will journalists in distress continue to wait for token assistance?”
Gbadamosi, a former Assistant National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, further sought for the involvement of the African Union in journalists welfare issues.
His words: “Reporters San Frontiers (Reporters Without Boarders) has arranged a global insurance cover for journalists, photographers and freelancers who are citizens of the European Union.
