The Edo Commissioner for Finance, John Inegbedion and a former member of the House of Representatives, Patrick Ikharhiale, are both eying the Edo Central Senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the APC senatorial primaries will hold across the country on Tuesday.
NAN reports that Inegbedion is said to have the backing of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the entire APC structure in the senatorial district.
He is currently the longest serving commissioner in the state, having first served for eight years under Adams Oshiomhole.
His main contender for the ticket, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, has stepped down from the race and promised to work with the APC structure in the locality.
Ikharhiale on his part has not held any political position, both in the state and at the federal level, since he left the Green Chamber in 2015.
The chances of Inegbedion received a boost on Saturday when, a Socio-cultural group, the Esan Mandate Group, within the APC endorsed his candidacy.
The group’s National Coordinator, James Onoriase, attributed the support for Inegbedion to the political leadership he had provided in Igueben Local Government.
Onoriase said the group was already wooing APC members in the five Local Government Areas to vote Inegbedion.
