Envoy urges Ekiti politicians to obey rules in upcoming election

The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Laure Beaufils, on Tuesday said the international community was watching Ekiti as the July 14 governorship election drew nearer.
Beaufils made the remark when she paid courtesy visit to management of a private radio station, Voice 89.9 FM in Ado Ekiti.
She urged politicians in the state to play the game according to the rules to ensure successful conduct of the poll.
She also urged politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner in the build-up to the election.
The envoy said Britain expected the conduct of open and transparent primaries which would lead to credible election in 2019.
Beaufils urged politicians to dwell on issues and their manifestos rather than attacking personalities, stressing that “I believe the primaries should be open even though it would definitely be a tense period, people all over the country were looking forward to it”.
She added: “Politicians should dwell on issues, policies and manifestos rather than on personalities. The coming Ekiti election is a signal to the February 2019 general elections.”
She described Nigeria as a wonderful country with creative and dynamic citizens, stressing that the country was not as bad as it was being portrayed across the globe.
Beaufils said there were positive stories to tell about Nigeria rather than corruption and Boko Haram which attracted local and foreign media attention.
The General Manager of the radio station, Donald Falaye, said the station had maintained neutrality in the coverage and reportage of events in the state in line with the broadcasting code.
He said the station would give massive coverage to the Ekiti election in all the 16 local government areas of the state, with the full compliments of an Outside Broadcasting Van to be deployed to polling booths.
