Delta PDP in all night meeting, backs Edevbie for governorship

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State has settled for the candidacy of a former Commissioner for Finance in the state, David Edevbie, for next year’s governorship election.

The decision was sealed at an all night meeting presided over by the state Governor and leader of the PDP in the state, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

The meeting, The Eagle Online learnt, only ended at about 5am, with the party’s primaries scheduled for later in the day on Monday.

Edevbie, who was in charge of finance as commissioner in the eight years of the tenure of former Governor James Ibori, was adopted by the Urhobo Progressive Union as its sole candidate for the governorship poll.

He is from Delta South Senatorial District.

This has put paid to the ambition of the people of Delta North Senatorial District to produce the governorship candidate of the PDP.

The District has never produced a governor for the state.

Before the change in plans, a former Permanent Secretary in the state’s civil service, Tony Obuh, from Delta North Senatorial District, was believed to be positioned for the governorship.

Asked if Delta North Senatorial District was being considered for the deputy governor’s position, a source at the meeting said: “That decision will only be taken after the primaries.

“And that will be after deliberate efforts have been made to pacify the people of the North on the need for the Central to produce the governor again.

“There is no point making it look like anyone can be muscled or wrestled to submission in any political contest.”
