The Lagos State Police Command has dispelled as rumour the alleged planting of a bomb in a politician’s car in the Ajegunle area of the state.
According to police authorities, there was only an explosion close to the politician’s car.
Police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, said anti-bomb personnel had visited the scene and taken sample particles for forensic analysis.
Nwosu said: “The so-called Alhaji said he went to his friend’s house.
“On his way out, he heard explosion by his car.
“Our men were there to gather some particles and have taken the particles for analysis.
“As speak with you, nobody was injured and nothing damaged.
“We’re still investigating the incident.
“It was the tyre side of the vehicle that had little damage and the car is parked in the police station right now.”
An eyewitness said that the car was parked on a street in the area when residents heard a loud explosion and saw smoke billowing from the car.
The first news that travelled like wildfire was that the car exploded, but when police got there, only part of it was affected.
The politician, simply identified as Alhaji Simba, was the person who alerted the police.
His supporters feared that his political opponents were attempting to snuff out his life.
Before the arrival of the Police Bomb Squad, Policemen from Ajegunle Police Station had dashed to the scene.
A police source said: “Nobody was injured, but we alerted the Anti-Bomb Unit.
“The team was led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Imo Sunday.
“They went to the scene and examined the car.
“They also took some particles.
“For now, we’re not going to say whether it’s a bomb that exploded or not.
“We’re going to use our laboratory and test the objects we took from the scene to know whether it was a bomb or not.
“It’s from our forensic analyses that we’ll know.”
