The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sealed the secretariat of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Port Harcourt.
The sealing of the secretariat was made known by the Chairman of the NLC in Rivers State, Beatrice Itubo.
Itubo said the state secretariat, donated to the NLC by Wike’s Administration, was sealed by officials of the Rivers State Government at 9pm on Sunday.
Itubo said the Rivers State Government has embarked on the intimidation of workers over the yet to be paid new minimum wage as agreed by both parties.
Itubo had last week told the state’s workers to be on the alert and await further directives on the minimum wage.
She said the that indifference of Wike’s administration would no longer be tolerated.
The state government had, however, on Saturday night issued a threat to the workers on the intended face-off against the workers.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, in a statement said the NLC should be ready to face “dire consequences” if it made good its threat.
The Government accused the leadership of the NLC of becoming tools in the hands of unnamed politicians.
Nsirim said: “Rivers State government has commenced the payment of the new minimum wage for employees of the state public service with the consequential salary adjustments as approved by the Federal Government, and will not be deterred by cheap blackmail.
“Governor Wike remains committed to workers’ welfare and will not allow the activities of a few disgruntled elements to dissuade his resolve to serve the people.”
