The Osun State House of Assembly on Tuesday directed Abimbola Daniyan, the Chairman of the State Tourism Board, to step down as the board’s chairman with immediate effect.
The House gave the directive in Osogbo when Sikiru Ayedun, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism, appeared before the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation for the 2013 budget performance review.
The lawmakers gave the directive following the commissioner’s comment that there was a conflict of roles between the board and the ministry.
Ayedun said that the board, under the chairmanship of Daniyan, was acting autonomously and not reporting its activities to the ministry.
Daniyan, who also doubles as the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Tourism, responded that it had been the standard practice in the state for the board to act independently.
Assemblyman Kamil Oyedele, the Chairman of the House Committee, who gave the directive, said that the conflict of roles between the board and ministry was hindering the plans of the state government to develop the tourism sector.
Oyedele, who said the board was supposed to be operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism, noted that there was no extant law backing the board’s autonomy.
He said: “With immediate effect, the board chairman should step down for the progress of tourism in the state.
“The conflict of roles between the ministry and board is affecting the development of tourism in the state.”
Oyedele also warned Babatunde Kolawole, the General Manager of the Tourism Board, to desist from acts that could cause confusion in the ministry.
He warned the failure of Kolawole to heed the warning might lead to his redeployment.
