Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has emerged the 2013 African Youth Man of the Year.
The award followed the nomination and selection process for the 2013 AYM of the Year 2013, which saw Akpabio emerge as winner.
Mathapelo Mushwene, the Chairperson of the 2013 Award Steering Committee, announced the winner in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
The statement quoted Mushwene as saying that Akpabio’s selection was based on his outstanding contributions in youth education, job creation and encouragement of young people in governance and decision making.
She said Akpabio would take over from President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, who won the award in 2012.
She added that the award presentation ceremony would take place in Abuja during the opening session of the Africa Youth Leader’s Conference, organised in commemoration of the 8th African Youth Day on November 1.
The Management Board of the African Centre for Youth Development and Empowerment and the Award Steering Committee congratulated the governor for an honour well deserved.
