The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has against sent emissaries to the Governor of Rivers State, Nyeson Wike, to join his campaign team with other aggrieved governors.
This was just as the party at the national level said it was optimistic of a resolution of the face-off between the two.
Abubakar is said to have refused to give up on Wike, who is leading four other governors elected on the platform of the party, now known as G5, to boycott his campaign.
The Eagle Online is reporting that the former vice president was in Benin, the Edo State capital, in continuation of his campaign on Saturday.
Apart from Governor Wike, others in the G5 are Governnors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.
But the party is hopeful of a resolution of the crisis.
Addressing a press conference on the ongoing campaigns for the elections, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, said the PDP had a robust mechanism for dealing with issues.
Ologunagba said: “The party will go through that process, but the ultimate goal is to reconcile every member because of the higher calling to rescue this country.”
He also said reconciliation was not a 100 meter race, and that 24 hours in politics is like a lifetime, adding that the reconciliation effort between leaders of the party and Wike’s camp was work in progress.
