The Federal Road Safety Commission in Bayelsa State on Wednesday advised motorists to beat the June 30 deadline for the change to the new number plate and driver’s licence policy.
The Sector Commander, Vincent Jack, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, that the policy should be embraced in view of security benefits, including recovery of stolen.
According to him, enforcement of the new policy will begin as from July 1 and that defaulters will be sanctioned.
Jack said: “I want to advice all motorists to key in to the programme as quickly as possible.
“Don’t wait till June 30th because from July 1, we will commence enforcement.
“Mr. President himself has obtained his driver’s licence, governors, top civil servants and top government officials have come forward to obtain their licences.
“Please, go ahead and change over to the new driver’s licence and the number plate.
“It is in the best interest of the security and safety of all of us on Nigeria’s roads.
“By the time, every road user key into this programme, we will not really need to impound your vehicle on the road.
“Because when you commit any traffic offence and you take off, we just need your number.
“When we get your number, we know your house, we know what you do and we know where you work.
“So, all we need to do is to make arrangement, get a warrant of arrest, move in and pick you up.”
Jack explained that the number plate comes with in-built security features that would drastically reduce the incidents of car theft.
He said that the command had embarked on series of campaigns on the need for the new number plate and driver’s licence in the country.
