How Deputy Speaker’s aide died over inability to pay N165,000 medical bill

An aide to Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Biodun Hassan, died on June 9 due to failure to pay N165,000 medical fee.

Owing to this, hundreds of legislative aides staged a peaceful protest over poor welfare condition.

And sequel to the development, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has summoned management of the National Assembly over the poor welfare condition of legislative aides.

Addressing newsmen, the spokesman of the ‎group, Dayo Fadugba, said Hassan died due to failure to pay N165,000 to operate him for appendicitis.

While he was waiting for the payment of his salary, his condition degenerated and the appendicitis ruptured.

Fadugba amented that the decision of Clerk of National Assembly, Sani Omolori, to domicile aides salary account into mushroom and unknown financial institutions, adding that this was motivated by ulterior motive.

He said: “We are here today to mourn the untimely and unfortunate death of one of our colleagues, Hassan Abiodun.

“Even as we morun, we see‎ clearly that his death may have been averted.

“Hassan died on Saturday June 10, 2017 while waiting for salary to operate his appendictis.

“While he hoped, his condition degenerated and the appendictis ruptured.

“Hassan is a victim of a flawed and unjust system.

“Specifically, our primary grouse is the failure of management to pay our salaries and entitlements.

“Today is Tuesday, 13th day of June.

“May salaries was just paid yesterday after we embarked on a blockade of the Sun Trust Bank yesterday.

“This is occasioned partly by the CNA’s unilateral decision to domicile salary account with mushroom and unknown financial institutions with low capacity and infrastructure to handle the volume of transaction the CNA has foisted on them.

“Indeed, we are convinced that the decision of domicile our salaries with Sun Trust Bank is motivated by ulterior motive aimed at bolstering the financial standing of the micro finance bank masquerading as a commercial institution.”
