Ajibarede Bello, League Director of the Tijani Umar-led faction of Nigeria Basketball Federation, on Monday said they were yet to send out invitations for participation in their league competitions.
Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that they would organise the league competitions, which are in the lower divisional and premiership levels, at the appropriate time.
He added that they would however do this without frustrating world sport ruling body FIBA’s efforts at resolving the leadership crisis currently rocking the federation.
He said: “We have not issued any invitation to any team yet, but we are going to organise it so that basketball will continue to thrive in the country.
“Our board recently held a meeting with the league management board and we told them that we don’t want to disrupt FIBA’s efforts at resolving the crisis in the NBBF.
“I want to assure that our board will soon organise the divisional leagues because it is obvious that the other faction of NBBF does not have the ability to organise the leagues.”
He said it was not the Umar-led NBBF faction that sent out invitation to basketball clubs to participate in the male division one and two league competitions in Kaduna.
Bello said: “We have not issued any invitation to any club. Those saying we sent out invitations are those are expecting our board to organise the leagues instead of the other faction.”
NAN reports that the Musa Kida-led NBBF board had earlier issued a letter to state basketball associations in the country to ignore the invitation for division one and two leagues.
The league competitions were said to have been scheduled to hold in Kaduna from January 5.
NAN reports that FIBA has given the Nigeria Olympic Committee a February 28 deadline to resolve the leadership tussle currently rocking the NBBF.
