A mild drama played out during the send forth party held at Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos State, for the immediate past Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) in charge of Ikeja Police Station.
Mr. Abiodun Alabi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), who was the guest of honour to members of Ikeja Police Community Relation Committee (PCRC), in his address said that the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force were engaged in a thank less job, adding that members of the public do not appreciate them nor were they able to relate with the hazards the police go through.
But Mr. Folorusho Atta, a security analyst countered him, arguing that the Nigeria Police Force had too many bad eggs and evil personnel, “who have no fear of God, and are always caught doing questionable acts. This is part of the reason members of the public do not appreciate them.”
Atta added: “I’m not saying there are no good men and women in the force. Alabi is a friend. He is an epitome of humility, a hardworking fellow who shuns indiscipline. But how many Alabis do we have in the force? They are very few!’’
Alabi said: “It is the police who used to keep awake and watch while others sleep. Yet members of the public don’t appreciates the police or better still, cooperate with the police. This attitude over the years has helped in demoralizing personnel of the force.”
According to Alabi who is now with the Police Mobile Force (PMF) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the successes of some police chiefs in the country were made possible by a few individuals and corporate bodies who knew the importance of security while showering encomiums on members of the Ikeja police PCRC.
Alabi disclosed that there were certain people in the society who detested members of the police, to the extent that they often refused to divulge information to the police. Alabi hailed the Ikeja PCRC members for meeting the challenges of the Police in the area.
The former chairman of the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Authourity, (LCDA), Chief Idowu Obasa was able to tackle the menace of armed hoodlums in Ikeja, Maryland and Onigbongbo.
The Area ‘F’ Commander, Mr. Tunde Adagunduro, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP), who was Alabi immediate boss, described Alabi as, “an officer who does not compromise indiscipline. Such officers were few in the force.”
Chairman of the PCRC in the area, Chief Lare Labode who presented a Chester Deep Freezer to Alabi, said that even as Ikeja division had always been lucky with having sound DPOs, Alabi was one of the best, who hated injustice.
