TUC wants Nigeria to build strong institutions

The Trade Union Congress on Monday said that for Nigeria to make meaningful progress, it must build strong institutions.
The TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama, who made this known in Lagos, told journalists: “There is a dearth of institutions in the country.
“What we have in our country is predominance of powerful individuals instead of powerful institutions.
“No country makes progress anywhere in the world where we have powerful individuals as opposed to institutions.”
Kaigama said the country’s leaders should desist from blaming the military for the rot in the country.
“Each time the congress laments the state of the economy, we are told that the military disrupted everything, even years after,” he said.
The TUC president reiterated the union’s support for the proposed national dialogue, stressing: “Social dialogue is an important ingredient in nation building.
“The challenges facing the country are resolvable and must start with the unity of the country.”
Kaigama faulted the Contributory Pension Act, stressing that the gratuity aspect of the Act was not in the interest of workers.
He said: “I hope the review of the Act capture the aspect of gratuity so that the beneficiary can have bulk money to attend to his needs.
“I believe that when someone has served his fatherland for 30 to 35 years he should be able to have some money to fall back to when he retires.
“This Contributory Pension does not cater for such.”
