Three remanded in Lagos for robbing policeman at gunpoint

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has ordered the remand of three men in prison for allegedly robbing a police officer at a gunpoint.

The Magistrate, Abimbola Komolafe, said the trio should remain in prison custody pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions.

“The case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP for advice,” Komolafe ruled.

The accused – Okanlawon Ahisebutu, 35; Mathew George, 27; and Moshood Okemati, 33 – are facing a two-count charge bothering on assault and armed robbery.

Earlier during the court proceedings, the prosecutor, ASP Eranus Nnamonu, said the accused, who were all residing at Isiu Village in Ikorodu, committed the offences on May 7 at 2pm at Isiu.

Nnamonu told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large.

He said: “The three accused and their accomplices attacked Corporal Ehimeme Akhana at his duty post and dispossessed him of his service rifle.

“They were armed with guns, knives and harmful objects, attacked Akhana and viciously assaulted him.

“They did not only dispossess the policeman of his service rifle marked K2 No. 003335, but also ran away with 20 live cartridges.”

Nnamonu said the accused were apprehended at their hide-out following a tip-off.

He said: “Seven live cartridges were found on them.”

Nnamonu noted that the offences contravened Sections 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Laws of the Federation 1990.

The case was adjourned to July 9 for mention.
